Research Tutorial

This tutorial aims to help develop effective library research skills and critical thinking skills in all courses at Prince George's Community College.

Computers and Printers

Public Workstations

Computer Area

The PGCC Library offers 34 computers for use by students and other library patrons. These computers are located on the first floor near the information service desk. The computers provide access to all PGCC electronic resources, including the Library's catalog, e-books and research databases. Users will need to log in with their Owl Link ID and password. Library staff at a service desk may login patrons if ID and password are not available.

Computer use is first-come-first-served. There is no sign-up or time limit; however, priority is given to those who need use of the computers for research purposes as opposed to recreational use.

Photocopiers and Printer

The photocopiers are located next to the Accokeek Cafe on the 1st floor. Photocopy print jobs cost 10 cents per page.

The printer is located on the 1st floor at the Circulation Desk. There is a 10 cents per page fee for black and white printing and a 25 cents per page fee for printing in color. Payments for printing are to be made at the Circulation Service Desk at the time one retrieves a print job.

A tocuhscreen scanner is available on the first floor. Patrons are able to scan books and documents into searchable PDF, Word doc, JPEG with the click of a button. Send scanned files to email, smartphone, tablet as well as Google Drive at no cost. Fees for printing scans are: 10 cents black & white and 25 cents for color.

Wireless Network

Wireless Networking

A wireless network is available in the PGCC library. The wireless network provides access to the Internet. Connecting to the Internet requires a wireless enabled device. A brochure providing instructions on how to access the Library's wireless network may be obtained at the Circulation Services or Information Reference Desk.

Using Windows XP or 7:

1. Most computers should detect the signal automatically and notify you that it is available. If it is, left-click the wireless icon in the system tray and then select the option: PGCC-AIR and click Connect

2. If Step 1 does not work, you can configure the computer manually by completing the following steps:

a. Click Start - Settings - Network Connections

b. Right-click the Wireless Network icon and click Properties

c. Click the Wireless Networks tab and click View Wireless Networks, then highlight PGCC-AIR

d. If the Wireless Networks tab is not available, then right-click the Wireless Network icon from the previous window and click enable. Then repeat steps (b) and (c)

e. Click the Connect button and click continue anyway if prompted

f. The screen should read the PGCC-AIR is connected, then close all open windows

3. Once connected to the network, open your Internet browser. It should immediately redirect you to the Portal Login page.
