Information Literacy Instruction

The Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education grows out of a belief that information literacy as an educational reform movement will realize its potential only through a richer, more complex set of core ideas. During the fifteen years since the publication of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, academic librarians and their partners in higher education associations have developed learning outcomes, tools, and resources that some institutions have deployed to infuse information literacy concepts and skills into their curricula. 

The framework addresses habits of mind and provides a new vision to address the needs of today's learners in the 21st Century. To that end, student learning outcomes for information literacy were conceived and mapped to course outcomes to provide a more meaningful frame of reference for today's learners.

Scheduling Information Literacy Instruction Classes

We request the faculty member be present and participate in the sessions to emphasize the importance of this learning and research process.

Instruction Offerings 

  • Online: An embedded librarian is integrated for a set period of time, usually a week, to support the students in their research process.  Many students have difficulties and need help, not only accessing resources remotely, but knowing what resources and services are available to them. An embedded librarian will provide support for these students in their virtual space. 
  • Remote: This is a one-time session to facilitate online learning and information literacy instruction. Synchronous online learning occurs in real-time at a specific time and date. Instruction will be offered using Zoom in Canvas. The class session will be offered, recorded, and posted in the Canvas course for those students who are unable to attend in real-time.
  • Hybrid Remote and Online: Hybrid synchronous and asynchronous online instruction blends both a real-time synchronous virtual library instruction session with a one-week asynchronous embedded instruction. The benefit of this combines the feel of a face-to-face synchronous session at a specific time and date with a faculty librarian embedded in the course shell for a one-week period. Using Canvas and other learning tools, the class session will be offered, recorded, and posted in the Canvas course for those students who are unable to attend in real-time. The faculty librarian will be embedded as a teaching assistant in the Canvas course to provided additional resources, answer questions, and provide feedback.

What can a librarian do for your class?

  • help narrow topics and brainstorm ideas for research
  • identify keywords and search terms for a topic
  • help students find credible sources and peer-reviewed articles
  • provide information about the library's databases, e-books, and services
  • provide information about citations
  • answer questions about the library or research

What Happens Next?

Once your instruction request has been sent, you will receive an appointment through Outlook (campus email). Responses to instruction requests vary from 24-48 hours.
