Canvas and Library Resources

How to add and use library resources in Canvas using persistent links and LTIs
What are Persistent Links?

A persistent link is a URL that allows users to link directly to an online article, document, book, etc. and allows students to access the Prince George's Community College Library's electronic subscriptions.

Persistent links are also known as durable links, stable links, or permalinks.

Persistent links can be placed within Canvas, course syllabi, and reading lists.

Why should I use Persistent Links?

  • Persistent links help databases keep track of how often and how many resources are downloaded. This helps librarians know what is important to you.
  • You can link to a resource and remain copyright compliant. Failure to follow copyright laws can result in fines for the college.

Add Library Resources to a Canvas course

Instructors can integrate the library's digital resources (eBooks, eJournal, Articles, Streaming video) in Canvas with Persistent links from library databases.

There are two ways to use Persistent links in a Canvas course - add links to a course module or the Rich Text Editor.

Course Module

Persistent links are available from any library database. The image below shows step two. The instructor will need to choose "External URL" from the drop down menu and add the resource's persistent link in the URL box.

Basic steps to add a library resource (eBook, eJournal, Article, or Streaming video) to a Course module

1. Open a Course in Canvas and click + in the Module header

2. Select external URL; add the resource URL and the page name

3. Click Add Item

Rich Text Editor

Instructors can add Persistent links from the Rich Text editor in Canvas areas: file, assignment, discussion, page, and quiz. Use the links button to add a library resource.

Step 1 - Copy the resource's persistent link from a library database

Step 2 -  Use the Rich Text Editor and click on the links icon

Step 3 - Add text and Persistent link in the Text and Link boxes, click Done to add the Persistent link
